Leads for a family law firm now cost more than ever before. Competition is pushing the cost per click up on terms like "divorce lawyer" and "child custody attorney."

Getting the phone to ring is the easy part now. The money is instead made or lost in your tracking and your intake process.

If you can't trace which keyword produced a signed retainer, or if your team still chases intake forms by hand, your firm might be losing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year without seeing it happen.

Below is a 15-point self-assessment built for firm owners and executives who have revenue targets but no data visibility. Count how many questions you can answer "Yes" to with full confidence. Guessing counts as a "No."

Part 1: Lead Attribution - Are You Tracking the Right Data?

Most firms know how many leads came in last month. Very few know where they’re getting their highest-paying clients from.

1. Are you tracking the exact keyword that triggered each prospect's call?

Without the search term, you can't fix your ad spend. You could unknowingly be paying for "free divorce advice" clicks while your competitor has locked in on clients searching for "high net worth divorce lawyer."

2. Do you know which marketing channel produces your highest LTV (Lifetime Value) clients?

A lead from SEO, Google Ads, and Local Service Ads may look identical on day one. Twelve months later, one of those channels might be paying its own bills and the other two might be draining your trust accounts. You need to know which is which so to pull back on those.

3. Are all web form submissions automatically tagged with their traffic source?

When a form finds its way into your CRM *(MyCase, Clio, Lawmatics)*, your intake team should be able to see exactly how that person found you. If there are no tags, there is no attribution, and you make your budget decisions blind.

4. Do you use dynamic number insertion (DNI) to track phone calls?

DNI swaps the phone number shown on your website based on how the visitor arrived. Every call will tie back to a specific campaign. Firms without DNI are guessing at half their pipeline, because most family law leads still call first.

5. Can you identify which ad copy prompted the prospect to take action?

When you know which message pulls in your ideal client, you must scale the winners and get rid of the losers. This ensures your funding is going to exactly the right message.

Part 2: Intake Automation — How much are you relying on humans?

Speed to lead and consistent follow-up will decide your conversion rate. Manual follow-up means that leads may slip through the cracks, as typical of Fridays and weekends.

6. Do you send automated email and SMS reminders for unreturned intake forms?

Prospects can get distracted. Divorce inquiries compete with work, kids, and every other stressor in one’s day-to-day. An automated nudge raises completion rates on pre-consultation questionnaires without inflating staff hours.

7. Is a calendar booking link sent the moment a form is completed?

Let prospects book their consultation instantly. Waiting for a receptionist to call back gives them time to call the next firm on the search results page. Whoever gives them the most sure and instant response gets picked.

8. Do you run a multi-touch reminder sequence to prevent consultation no-shows?

Absentees burn attorney hours that you can never bill back. Text and email reminders at 24 hours and 1 hour before the meeting aren’t overkill, or nice to have. These are things that should be standard.

9. Are no-shows instantly directed to human intake staff to re-engage?

When leads miss their consultations, your system should notify your intake team immediately. Calling them the very same day statistically recovers more absentees than reaching out to them only days later.

10. Are reminders after a consultation automatically sent for retainer signatures and payments?

The consultation went well, but the retainer is sitting unsigned. Automate the follow-up for signatures and payment so your attorneys never have to chase paperwork or credit card numbers.

Part 3: ROI and Financials — Do You Know Your True Numbers?

Website traffic and cost per click are vanity metrics, because they don't make payroll. These five questions, on the other hand, do.

11. Do you calculate true Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) per signed client?

Cost per lead tells you almost nothing. The number that should actually matter to you is how many marketing dollars it takes to produce one signed retainer agreement.

12. Does your marketing ROI take client Lifetime Value (LTV) into account?

A $3,000 retainer initially could turn into $15,000 of billable work over a year. Measuring ROI on the first payment only means you will end up under-funding campaigns that are really your most lucrative ones.

13. Do you track payment leakage after initial retainers are exhausted?

When the trust account runs dry, how much uncollected debt does your firm write off? That write-off comes straight out of your true marketing ROI, whether you track it or not.

14. Are you measuring Return on Time Invested (ROTI) for referral networking?

Lunches with estate attorneys and therapists cost time and money. If those B2B referral relationships aren't producing signed cases, that time might be better spent somewhere else.

15. Do you compare the net revenue of leads handled by AI vs a human?

If you use an AI receptionist or intake bot, track its conversion rate and average case value against your in-house intake team. Efficiency that lowers case quality is simply a pay cut.

How Has Your Firm Scored?

If you answered "No" or "I'm not sure" to more than 3 of these questions, your firm has leaks in its marketing and intake pipeline that are unsustainable in the long-run. Each one of these leaks is measurable and fixable.

These 15 questions are the starting point. A full audit covers your Google Search Ads structure, Local Service Ads disputes, CRM pipeline stages, and your intake team's KPIs.
