The AI Overview Myth vs. Reality

AI Overviews redistribute search traffic, penalizing major authoritative sites while boosting small, direct, locally relevant law firm websites.

Quick Answer

Instead of killing organic search, AI Overviews redistribute traffic based on answer clarity and local intent. While giant websites lose dominance, 66% of top Florida family law sites gained visits, proving hyper-local relevance outweighs traditional domain authority.

Table of Contents

For the last few years, the same apprehension has been dominating all SEO discussions. It is that AI Overviews are taking clicks away from websites.

That apprehension seems quite understandable. Why should a user click on a website after receiving the answer to their query at the very top of Google search results page? It is obvious that for major publishers and websites with huge amounts of information, the development of AI-generated answers has led to some reasonable worries regarding their organic traffic.

However, that perspective completely changes when we talk about local and intent-oriented industries.

Our own investigation of the top 50 family law websites (part of a wider 5500 firm study across the state) in Florida shows a totally opposite tendency. AI Overviews, instead of destroying organic traffic, seem to be redistributing it. While some major websites are experiencing significant declines, some lesser-known websites are experiencing exceptional growth.

It might mean a lot of opportunities for family law firms.

The main message here is quite simple. AI Overviews do not take clicks away. They distribute them.

The data about the family law search market of Florida illustrates the significance of the described phenomenon quite clearly.

Indeed, of the 50 top family law websites examined, as much as 66% showed positive traffic growth after the release of AI Overviews. Thus, more than two-thirds of the examined websites managed to increase their organic traffic.

As for the median traffic results, they seem to be even more impressive.

Prior to the update of the AI Overviews algorithm, the median website attracted about 404 visits per month. However, after the introduction of AI, it received 912 monthly visits. This is more than doubling the median traffic.

In the case of the average figures, the results seem to be less encouraging.

The total average organic traffic per month dropped from 3,429 visits to 3,205 visits.

However, in this case, averages might distort the picture of reality since a couple of extremely large websites are dominating the numbers.

It seems that the average drop in traffic was caused by several huge websites that have previously absorbed the majority of organic clicks. At the same time, a considerable number of smaller and mid-sized companies managed to attract more traffic.

This is why it will be wrong to call AI Overviews traffic killer.

Instead of concentrating the traffic within the boundaries of several websites, it distributes it between competitors.

In the case of local businesses, such redistribution of traffic may be a really good development. After all, the family law search market seems to be especially favorable for such a development.

When searching for something like "divorce lawyer in Tampa", "child custody attorney in Orlando", or "family law attorney in Jacksonville", a person wants to find an attorney that could solve their legal problems and not some sort of authority on family law.

Winners, Losers, and the Authority Disconnect

Perhaps the best proof of the power of AI comes from the extremes.

There were websites that saw their traffic increase dramatically.

One such example was Hamilton O'Neill, which saw a 8,180% traffic increase. Another website that enjoyed massive growth was the Law Office of Taryn G. Sinatra, P.A., which increased traffic by 4,418%.

It is obvious that the new post-AI search environment is able to provide huge boosts for websites that until now had been less popular.

But there are other equally dramatic examples from the dataset.

The website My Florida Law saw its traffic decrease by almost 75%, losing from 17,459 monthly visits to 4,374. The decline of the site My Price Lawyers was even worse – 97.1%.

These are not marginal changes.

They prove how unstable the search visibility has become nowadays. Even a site that has invested time and effort into SEO, enjoys good rankings, has many backlinks, and enjoys considerable brand awareness can see its traffic significantly drop.

This is why one of the most crucial conclusions from the analysis is that authority does not seem to protect websites any longer.

The correlation between Domain Authority and the percentage traffic change turned out to be very weak, only r = 0.04, or, effectively, zero.

In other words, being a high-authority domain is not a guarantee of gaining traffic anymore.

It turns out to be the case due to a well-known fact about SEO.

For quite some time now, marketing professionals have relied on measures of domain authority and backlink profiles in their work. This information is still valuable but, according to the data, is no longer enough in an AI-powered environment.

Google does not decide which website has the greatest authority. What AI-driven search does is find the source that will provide the most helpful answer to the user's request. In other words, the competition is totally different now.

A smaller family law firm may lack many backlinks that are characteristic of a major legal website. But if the content provided by this firm answers the user's question with precision and relevance, then it will win the competition against the bigger player.

How Law Firms Can Win in the Post-AI Era

If even Domain authority websites seem to randomly lose traffic, then what should family law firms focus on exactly?

The answer starts with the content itself.

Optimize for Direct Answers

Content development should revolve around the questions the prospective clients might pose.

Rather than writing ambiguous articles, law firms need to develop pages that contain specific answers to particular legal questions.

Questions to be answered on a web page can include:

  • How long will an uncontested divorce last in Florida?
  • How is the issue of custody resolved in Florida?
  • What measures can be taken when one parent breaches a custody agreement?
  • How much does it cost to hire a divorce lawyer in Miami?
  • Can a spouse decline signing divorce papers in Florida?

Those are the kinds of questions which would naturally emerge in relation to the searches.

The point is not to write articles which would appeal solely to the algorithm, but to generate content which is useful enough for the algorithm to realize that those pages are the sources of valuable answers to those questions.

Because useful content is structured, contains concise answers, FAQs, and relevant supporting information.

Focus on Relevance

For the firms specialized in family law, the factor of relevance is the strongest competitive advantage.

While a nationwide legal website might have greater domain authority, it will probably lack the local relevance which could be achieved by a local family law firm.

In fact, the understanding of local courts, procedures, communities, and particularities of a certain area of Florida will be much better.

This implies that firms should work on improving local signals on their websites.

They should generate location-relevant content, describe legal procedures in the area when needed, develop strong business profiles, and generate pages which would be useful specifically for individual communities and not for a generic version with a different name inserted.

Firms need to niche down to their location. "Divorce Lawyer Florida" is quite general; While "Divorce lawyer serving families in Tampa and Hillsborough County" is much more specific. And this specificity becomes a competitive advantage in an AI-powered search environment.

Summary

The rise of AI Overviews doesn't mean organic search is dying. It means traffic is being redistributed. In Florida family law, 66% of the top 50 websites gained traffic, while median visits more than doubled from 404 to 912 per month. Some major sites suffered steep losses, while smaller firms saw explosive growth.

For law firms, the lesson is simple: don't rely on domain authority alone. Focus on clear answers, strong local relevance, useful legal content, and genuine expertise. In the post-AI search era, the firm that provides the best answer may be the one that earns the click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI Overviews reduce total organic traffic for all websites?

No. While AI Overviews decrease overall average clicks due to major site losses, they redistribute traffic, allowing over 66% of local family law websites to experience organic growth.

Why is Domain Authority no longer a guarantee for ranking in AI search?

AI search prioritizes precision, direct answers, and local intent over backlink volume. The correlation between Domain Authority and traffic growth in post-AI search is virtually zero (r = 0.04).

How can local law firms optimize their content for AI Overviews?

Focus on clear, structured answers to specific client questions, integrate FAQs, and target localized search queries (e.g., "divorce lawyer in Hillsborough County") rather than generic topics.
