Objective

A multitude of technical factors affect the Google Search rankings of Law Firms in the United States, including page speeds, practice area, keywords distribution and so on. Time Technologies is interested in finding out what these are, and in understanding how each of these factors affect ranking and traffic in their own rights.

We are investigating 5,500 Law Firms in the US over the course of this study in order to answer the following questions:

  1. What are page speed scores across all firms?
  2. Does a higher number of backlinks directly translate into website authority?
  3. Did AI overviews steal clicks from law firms' sites? Is it related to keyword mix?
  4. What practice areas are at an advantage in terms of key metrics?
  5. How do page speed scores, backlinks and authority scores affect search ranking?

Our Methodology

We obtained data for 5500 law firms throughout the US, divided into 50-firm sets by practice area and geographical area. This is done in two phases: data collection and data analysis.

1. Data Collection:

  • Google Search: used for lists of top 50 firms by query
  • LinkedIn: used for company size and employees
  • Python Scraping: used for website tech stacks
  • Manual vetting: used for website tech stacks
  • Semrush: used for website SEO metrics
  • Google Pagespeed API: used to extract lighthouse metrics from websites

2. Data Analysis

  • \(r\): Pearson correlation coefficient for mathematical terms
  • Team of Human Business Analysts for manual insights
