About The Guest

Andrew is the founder and owner of Spera Law Group, a cloud, remote, and paperless law firm in New Orleans, Louisiana. He enjoys working with business owners who want to build a long-lasting business by proactively addressing their legal needs, but also enjoys helping businesses out of tough situations after they're already in trouble.

After graduating from law school in 2011, He decided that he wouldn’t be happy in a traditional law office, and wanted to build a technology-driven law firm that exclusively helps small business owners create jobs and boost the Louisiana economy.

He is passionate about helping his clients with a wide variety of legal issues, but have started specializing in partnership and operating agreements after seeing so many lawyers mess this up for their clients.

In the past, He has helped clients form legal entities, review leases, file for trademarks, obtain the proper license, change zoning, and draft employment agreements.

As a very young lawyer, he quickly gained notoriety by lobbying the City of New Orleans on behalf of the New Orleans Food Truck Coalition for modern, business-friendly regulations.

As a tech nerd with a law license, he also enjoys finding efficient solutions to provide his clients with excellent services.

He has expanded his work from helping clients to helping other attorney run their law firms more efficiently.

He has presented twice at the American Bar Association's TECHSHOW, ClioCloud9 Conference, and multiple CLE seminars produced by the Louisiana State and Jefferson Parish Bar Associations. SuperLawyers named him to their Rising Star list in 2015, 2016, and 2017 as a Business/Corporate Attorney.

Key Takeaways

1. The Strategy of a Paperless Office

  • Cost Efficiency: Physical paper creates "legacy problems"—you pay for the space to store it, the labor to organize it, and the cost to eventually destroy it.
  • Global Scalability: A digital-first firm allows you to hire a global team. Andrew manages staff in the Philippines and the Dominican Republic, which wouldn't be possible with a traditional paper-filing system.
  • Security Paradox: Physical files are one fire or flood away from total loss. Digital storage with MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) and password managers is significantly more resilient.

2. The "Mindset Switch" for New Founders

  • Lawyer vs. Owner: Most attorneys fail because they try to be an "attorney first." Andrew argues you must be a business owner first and an attorney second. This means prioritizing systems for intake, billing, and security over just "doing the legal work".
  • The "Door Lawyer" Trap: Taking any case that walks in the door makes marketing impossible. Niching down allows you to speak clearly to one audience and eventually charge premium rates for specialized expertise.

3. Value Pricing & The Death of the Billable Hour

  • AI vs. Hourly Billing: AI allows lawyers to produce better work faster. If you bill by the hour, you are essentially punished for being efficient.
  • The Tiered Model: Andrew uses a Bronze, Silver, and Gold pricing structure. This allows the buyer to define value based on how fast they need the work and the level of "white glove" service they want.
  • Input vs. Output: Clients don't want to pay for your "inputs" (hours worked); they want to pay for the "output" (the contract, the protection, the peace of mind).

4. Employment and Partnership Hazards

  • The 1099 Myth: There is no such thing as a "1099 employee." Misclassifying workers is a "round cube"—it doesn't exist legally and creates massive tax and IP liabilities for the firm.
  • Document Early: Partnership disputes are the most expensive problems to fix. Documenting "what happens if someone dies, leaves, or gets divorced" on Day 1 is 10x cheaper than hiring a litigator on Day 500.
  • The 2-3% Rule: Healthy businesses should expect to spend 2-3% of their net revenue on legal counsel as a standard cost of doing business, rather than an emergency expense.
